Anaheim, CA: Mike Barker was installed as the President of the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors of Orange Riverside & San Bernardino Association along with the Board of Directors on Saturday, August 6th at the Claim Jumper Restaurant in Fountain Valley. Barker is a third generation plumbing contractor and owner of Barker & Sons Plumbing. After graduation from the PHCC of the Greater Los Angeles Area Apprenticeship Program, Mike took over the family business in January of 1983, and has been serving the Southern California customer base for over 30 years.
Barker is also a leader with a servant’s heart. A Contractor Member of the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association since 1994, Barker has been a passionate advocate on behalf of the plumbing industry. He believes in giving back to the industry that has supported him, and attributes his success to PHCC & QSC membership. He has served on the Board of Directors of the PHCC Orange, Riverside & San Bernardino chapter, moving through the chairs and serving as PHCC ORSBPresident for 2011-2012. Barker is a firm believer in training and certification for plumbers, and was instrumental in the founding of the PHCC ORSB Apprenticeship Training Program. He currently has 4 employees attending PHCC training, not just for the confidence of sending out a trained employee on behalf of his company, but because training directly affects the bottom line of his company. Barker says, ‘PHCC Contractors are held responsible for the work they do, regardless of intention. I can’t be on every job, but I’m confident of my employees doing the job right, with minimal call-backs. This directly affects our profitability, and consumer trust’.
Barker currently serves as a Director and Past President of the PHCC of California Board of Directors and sits on the Government Affairs Committee for the PHCC National Association. Merit (or open-shop) contractors are severely underrepresented at the state and national level, and Barker strenuously supports grass roots advocacy for our industry. Working in conjunction with State Lobbyist Richard Markuson, National Lobbyist Mark Riso, PHCC of California Government Relations Chair Geno Caccia and committee members at the state and national level, Barker leads the charge of combating the underground economy, advocating certification for plumbing technicians and touting continuing education for the betterment of the industry. Barker states, ’We have a voice within our industry that gives us the ability to express our opinions when bills are presented that are destructive or counterproductive. We can actually say something about it and have an impact.’
An industry visionary, Barker is a certified ‘Green Plumber’ and suggested energy and water saving fixtures to his customers before it became law. Drought concerns have been an issue in Southern California for years and Barker & Sons received their green certification in 2007 in anticipation of government regulation and an emerging ‘green market’. Always anticipating trends, Barker sees movement towards grey water usage, native vegetation, and stringent water and energy usage metering.
Barker believes that true success within his association membership has been a byproduct of taking advantage of the business & profit building tools offered through PHCC and QSC (Quality Service Contractors). He confidently states that he’s been able to grow his company, while reducing his workload, ultimately allowing him to spend time with his family, best friend and wife Brenda of 20 years and his 5 sons. Barker is a family man in the truest sense of the word, coaching his sons’ sports, and supporting their passion for music. The Barker family resides in Anaheim Hills.
